SIAS listed on the Register of Apprentice Assessment Organisations

SIAS is now included on the Register of Apprentice Assessment Organisations (RoAAO).

This follows a successful assessment from the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) which confirms that the Government has assessed SIAS as having both the expertise and the quality processes to independently assess apprentices on new Trailblazer apprenticeship standards in the science-based industries in England.

Christine Sakhardande, Head of SIAS said:  “Inclusion on the Register is great news for employers in the sector, who have worked in partnership to ensure the success of the Trailblazer Apprenticeships.

“Because of this partnership working, SIAS is ready to support science employers and providers to ensure the successful completion of these new apprenticeship programmes.”

SIAS is born from employer ownership of skills and in particular the development of apprenticeship Standards designed to give all employers confidence that their apprentices will develop the skills they need to be fully competent in their job role.

It is responsible for ensuring the assessments and testing for a number of the new style apprenticeships are to the high standards required by the Government and industry. It designs and delivers the end-point assessment tests which will lead to the national apprenticeship award.

SIAS works in partnership with science industry employers and training providers in the sector to deliver assessments for the following approved Apprenticeship Standards:

  • Laboratory Technician
  • Science Manufacturing Technician
  • Science Industry Maintenance Technician
  • Technician Laboratory Scientist

Under this new approach, an apprentice must attain full competency in an occupation, demonstrated by achievement of an Apprenticeship Standard.  Importantly, it is employers who have developed the assessment specifications that describe the tests that must be passed to meet the Standard.

The award that is conferred following successful assessment will be recognised and valued by employers as a currency that demonstrates the individual has met the industry standard.

The all-important end-point assessment comprises several methods, including, for example, completing mandatory knowledge qualifications, a skills evidence log, a professional discussion and a final assessment of on-the-job performance.

Christine Sakhardande added: “SIAS is now delivering a high quality and robust assessment service. We have designed internal quality assurance and verification processes to ensure the quality, consistency and validity of assessments.

“These new Standards will replace the existing frameworks from 2017 – so it’s vital to get on board with the changes ahead, and SIAS is happy to help both employers and providers looking for advice and guidance on end point assessment.”

SIAS was established at the request of the Science Industry Partnership (SIP) a skills partnership of science employers including SMEs.

SIAS is a division of Cogent Skills.
